I’m increasingly convinced that the reason that movement atheism is so dominated by white men is because there is no other way they can experience oppression.

Which is not to downplay the marginalization of atheists, which is very real, but it does create a problem, especially for women. The outright hostility and blatant misogyny I see among (predominantly white, male) atheists is disheartening, and the internalized misogyny among so many atheist women who are trying to fit in and be taken seriously is just heartbreaking.

Absolutely agreed (I don’t follow you but I saw this on the atheism tag so I’m not a creep). As a WOC atheist, it’s kind of hard to actually follow many New Atheists because of their misogyny towards theists who happen to be women. For example, the benevolent sexism that comes with Muslim women and how oppressed they are. Dudebros, you don’t get a oppression-free card when you identify yourself as an atheist. Not to mention how imperialistic some white atheists are when they talk about women in other countries of different religions and races.

Yes and yes!

*added* although I will clarify that I think white men can experience oppression along class lines, but movement atheists tend to be upper-class anyway so that’s kind of moot.
